Who are we?

Hwicce is a band of people originating on the Danish peninsula during the dak ages. Having travelled along the Frisian coast, we sailed across the sea to Britain, trying to find a safe place to call home. See us at Shows listed on our Facebook page and say hello.

In modern life we are a re-enactment group based in the Milton Keynes area. We are part of the international Viking Re-enactment Society in which we re-enact life in the dark ages as Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and occasionally Normans.

We have an ever-growing active fighting unit with a good blend of experience and youth. Our Living History skills are very broad: weavers, dyers, seamstresses, embroiderers, blacksmiths, armourers, leatherworkers, carpenters, artists and cooks.

Our ranks have also swollen over time with children, all of whom love to dress up and play surrounded by the spectacular British outdoors.

The saga of Hwicce

"We left Roskilde in the Dane lands on our knarr with some trade goods, craftsmen and families for our new life in Angleland, sailing along the coast we travelled down to Dorestad in Friesland collecting more families and new friends until at Quentovic we took on our last supplies and a few more friends before setting across the sea, we stopped at Hastings in the new lands and asked ‘where best to go?’ taking on a few more travellers we once more put to sea aiming for our new home. Pulling ashore having travelled up river we set up a temporary camp ready to put down more solid roots and offered our services to the local people."
